How Is Inflammatory Bowel Disease Diagnosed?

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can be extremely difficult to diagnose and some patients may suffer for years with the symptoms before getting an accurate diagnosis. In addition, some of the symptoms of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are similar to other bowel conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, and arteriovenous malformations.

In this short video from My Health Special, Consultant General and gastrointestinal surgeon, Mr. Ian Mitchell briefly explains that patients with inflammatory bowel disease are diagnosed using a series of tests. Usually, patients will need to provide their medical history, and undergo a physical examination, blood tests, radiology tests and a colonoscopy.
