This illustrated video from Michael Davis shares a little more information about Crohn’s disease. Davis explains that there’s no known cause for Crohn’s disease but scientists think that an overreaction by the immune system is triggered by a virus or bacteria and that certain people are genetically predisposed to developing the disease.

Symptoms of the disease include abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloody stools, weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue and fever. Flares can last anywhere from weeks to months.

There is currently no cure for Crohn’s disease but there are treatments and medications that can help control the symptoms and the disease can be managed to a certain extent by lifestyle changes. Some patients with moderate to severe cases of Crohn’s disease may need surgery.
